Dave2D review of the 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570. The i9-8950HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.

Like the new MacBook Pro, not much has changed aesthetically, The new 4k display panel is a little brighter. Awesome for content creation. Fortnite and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1050 Ti but keep in mind visuals are capped at 60 FPS because of the screen. The 2018 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop needs to be improved.

Excellent video please Try the new Dell Inspiron 7000 line super thin and light with the gt 150 mx and intel 8th gen.
ReplyI used to like Dell. The battery in my XPS15 is so swollen, the mouse pad is raised and unusable. I would not rate the XPS15 as an excellent laptop, but potentially dangerous. Although Dell informed me it is not dangerous, they recommend replacing it ASAP if I pay for it.
ReplyI have the i7 8th gen model and I totally agree. Many games will lag when there is cpu intensive work at hand. Usually I deal with this by turning off cpu intensive settings on my games but that’s not a full solution. I still don’t regret my purchase though because it ticks every other box
ReplySo all we need to do is keep it cool and we should be fine right?
ReplyI've just received my 2000 euro refund for the xps 15. It had problems with the speakers and it took Dell 5 months to try and repair it and in the end they didn't solve the problem and I asked for a refund. That took 3 more weeks so I'm pretty done with Dell to be honest. Their support is useless!!
ReplyDoes anyone know where I can buy the 97Wh battery. Im trying to replace my 56Wh one
ReplyDave, What do you think of the Thinkpad P1 2018? Does it compare well with the Dell XPS 9570? Any thermal comparison there as well?
ReplyHi Dave, would this be a good laptop for basic deep learning due to throttling issues?
ReplyIS dell xps 15 a good model for programming purpose like heavy programning…
ReplyWill it throttle with adobe photoshop or animate?? Or just while gaming?
ReplyWhat about the latency issues that haven't been solved yet?
ReplyThrottling isn't really an issue as much as a solution. It's how your chip doesn't burn itself to a cinder. At most as an editor I would use a laptop to cut when away from my workstation. But I would never be rendering or exporting with one, so if it throttles under heavy load, that doesn't really bother me, per se. I would much prefer to sacrifice a bit of speed in order to assure a longer life for my chip(s).
ReplyI have an older (9350) XPS13. Great machine but the wireless network card is really weak and very irritating (it drops stable connections frequently). Do you know if the wireless connectivity for this version has been improved?
ReplyHi Dave, I just bought my new XPS 15 9570 after watching your video, however I find out there is some buzzing noise come out from the left speaker of laptop, it's pretty annoy while in a quiet room., but thing is when I unplugged the charger, the noise disappear, I have seen some people posting the same issues at youtube too, just wonder if you find this same issue as well.
ReplyWHat a waste to put also the powerfull videocard, they should focus battery, storage and ram on these things
ReplyI am yet to find a thin notebook that doesn't experience at least some degree of noticeable thermal throttling with the i9 inside. The cheaper version of this model (example: XPS 15 9570-CPC1J) runs a six core i7-8750H, which should be enough for most workloads. Thermals with that lower class CPU are also better. I also find the display to be gorgeous. I've read that some people complain that there is no option for the FHD version with touch but then I always ask "Who the hell needs touch on a non-covertible notebook anyway?". In fact I would go for the 4K version IF they would offer me no touch. LOL
What I don't like is the fact that storage is made a sacrificial lamb in order to get more battery in that thing. Especially with that display and CPU horse power this notebook is likely to be picked by people, who use Photoshop or some other photo editing software (nowadays gotta appreciate the fact that we even get an SD card slot 🙁 …). This automatically means that extra storage is definitely appreciated. Then again we do have USB 3 and Thunderbolt so external storage is always a nice option.
ReplyGood day. I was watching your videos and i need a recommendations on what laptop to buy for a mobile workstation. I am currently having a 1000$ limitation. Lenovo thinkpad p-series is unavailablr in my country. I am considering buying xps 15 or g7, for rendering of lumion, autocads, revits, solidworks etc. And i casually play games too. What device would you think is the best?hp zbook g3 is unavailable also in our market. Thank you.
ReplyI have owned the Dell XPS 15 9560 2017 version for the past year and I can HONESTLY say its one of the WORST purchases of tech I have done in a while. I'm a professional video shooter and editor and I'm using the latest premiere pro CC and I can BARELY edit proxy 720p footage without it throttling after 25 minutes. This is AFTER using throttlestop and new thermal pastes. What's worse is the windows defender that automatically comes up from time to time and just chugs the pc making it unusable for hours on end… even my friend's macbook 13' 2016 can run lightroom faster and smoother than this device… Honestly disappointed that you recommended this to us video content creators.
TL;DR : XPS 15 & Windows is terrible.
P.S. Help if you know how to resolve this, gonna try to sell this off ASAP
ReplyBe nice if they added a XPS 17 inch laptop when was that original one discontinued 6 or 7 years ago? Could be totally different now.
ReplyThis might be a stupid question, but can you manually control the fans to diminish throttling if you don't mind the noise?
ReplyDave Lee…. I use photoshop and light room as a photographer which model would you buy the i7 or the i9?? I use premier every now and then but not that much???
ReplyWould external cooling devices (like fans, i guess) remedy this?

The new XPS 15 is an excellent laptop but it still has the same thermal issues. If you're considering one, do the thermal limitations bother you?
