I dont agree, I think the monster is thrown off by the axe in the face and the guy escapes as it's not concentrating on changing the forest to trap him because of said axe! That's why it roars at him through frustration and anger that hes out? He roars back from realisation and relief. That's my take.

Depending on if the mother of the creature was a human r not, it could be a demigod, like Loki's other children, like fenrir, jormungandr, and that other one.

Not hating on this theory, but I believe that the true reason the monster chose Luke was because of his cowardly characteristic. If you analyse each characters in the movie you can see that his other friends had leadership qualities and at some moments they may appear brave. If you also look at the people that worshipped the creature they have all appear to be cowards as well, the man for example surrendered when a gun was pointing to him, the lady didn't fight him, also the creature gouged out the lady's eyes because she looked UP at it, it's like a how dare you look at up at me kind of vibe, your head must be down to symbolise that you are scared and loyal and will not rebel, much like the customs of traditional kings and queens with their servants, to look them into the eye directly is an insult therefore eyes must be down always as a sign of respect, looking up juxtaposes that and that's why I believe that the monster only takes in cowards who will worship it for eternities and basically kills anyone who threatens his little cult. Furthermore I don't think the creature lets him run away bc he overcame his pain although that part is true, because before he forced him to kneel, like it must be shocked to see what it thought was a coward and soon to be loyal worshipper burn its nest, it gave him a second spook and revealed a "great" image of itself just like a god would to show off its visual in hopes that he could be overwhelmed by its greatness and be afraid and worship it finally. But then we see him attack it straight in the head and that's the whole reason he had a chance to escape, the beast misjudged him bc of his character development, I think it was in a state of shock for years and years his hunt for worshippers had been successful and it probably never seen a coward fight back. And so simply, the beast only hunts people who are characterised by aspect to cowardice, it represents fear and will guarantee the beast loyalty, its the perfect worshipper.
