Monster Hunter World – The Review (2018)

Monster Hunter World – The Review (2018)

I’d played two Monster Hunter games before this, and as such I went into World being pretty pessimistic about my chances of falling in love with the series all over again. Surely it was ‘played out’ and I’d quickly get bored of the same weapons and same Monsters and same grindy gameplay, right?

I love being this wrong.

I was stoked for this game since last year, and eagerly awaited its eventual port to PC. I had a very strong feeling that I'd like it, due to perceived similarities with other experiences I poured obscene amounts of time into in the past. I was, however, wrong in that assessment. I didn't like it.

I fucking loved it to where words don't do it justice.
I didn't care if I was the better part of a year late to the party. I didn't care that my friend had already had his fling with it and he dropped a couple of spoilers. I approached the game with a fresh set of eyes and a Christmas-day-morning level of giddiness and a good feeling about it, but I did not expect it to be the start of my next major love affair in gaming. Thank god I was wrong. Because it very much turned out to be the case.

It's so rare and beautiful in this day and age for something to actually exceed an educated set of hopes.

Also did you know? There's actually LORE to the Monster Hunter world. A case of great lore expertly hidden in plain sight. The basis is buried in the previous titles, but the Monster Hunter setting isn't just a crazy set of nonsensical video-game-logic circumstances. They actually took the care to have crafted a very clever backbone premise to it all that makes all the sense in the world, as everything so consistently lines up with it once you notice it, and it adds a level of depth to the experience that there's no way you could have expected when first stepping into a series with crazy living monsters, cartoonily-oversized weapons, and the campaigns never taking the creatively easy road of centering the narrative on those back plots to spoonfeed it outright for the layman like so many other experiences we've grown used to and have come to expect.

I can't fault you for missing that last piece in this review, as it is a gem hidden only for those that would be enthralled in the series as a whole enough to dig for it, but the fact that this review approached the rest of this game with the level of respect it rightfully deserves speaks of your professionalism and quality. Good on you, and thank god for this phenomenal product.

    And hype for Iceborne.

    with a 1070 and 5820K, 1440p:

    Blur off (dont like it)
    DoF off (dont like it)
    Vignete off (dont like it)
Volume something off (Dont like the whiteish haze all over the place)
AA: off (Every form of AA in this game resulted in a too soft image, i prefer sharp).
Everything else maxed out (nothing variable).
    hovering between 60 and 75fps.

At first I thought this game was garbage and not my type of game but after watching this review and buying it on sale. It's worth 80 dollars .. I've spent 35 hours and haven't even scratched the surface yet . I Definitely took this game for granted and should of gotten it sooner . . Definitely understand why it's game of the year .. it's one of a kind and definitely going to become a top contender for other games for years to come .

"The combat in MH shits all over Dark Souls"

Thumbsdown, unsubscribe, closes browser, shuts down and unplugs PC, carries PC out to bin, lights bin on fire, collects ashes into urn, sprinkles ashes at sea.

You, my plucky Aussie chum, have gone too far this time. Nothing short of an apology handwritten in blood can fix this mess.

Just wanted to say THANK you for the spoiler alert. I'm an old time gamer, but MHW is new to me. I can see why the community at large frowns on youtube reveals of monsters in the game. It really is something to see a new monster and go "OMG! WTF is THAT?" then, "how the hell do you pronounce that?" followed quickly with… "how am I supposed to kill it?" and usually something like "holy hell! It breaths fire too!?!?" 😀

That reaction is pure gold, so I appreciate you're saying so.

Also of worthy mention, got caught up in my first monster 3 way last night between a Rathian, Rathalos and an Anjanath. I was in a group of random players so I'm glad nobody was slinging out dung pods to make any of them go away. We just let them rampage hoping they'll whittle each other down for us to finish them off. It was insane fun! Like an old B monster movie or something, except you're in the middle of it just trying not to die and get a few hits in! Even my wife paused to watch the mayhem!

    AWESOME GAME!

Bought it, played it for 1 and half hour and got myself a refund.
Why? Because i felt i had to invest a lot of time into learning and the game itself, i had other time consuming games that i was playing.
But this review sounds convincing that it's really worth putting the time into it.
Probably going to buy it again.

That one theme you used from the game at the end of your video always makes me feel something inside. It's my first experience with the franchise but after completing the main meat of the game, and after listening to that theme played beautifully in the end credits- I feel like I've known this game for ever. Or at least, I've always wanted to meet this type of game.

So “quick” question: having played other great games this year such as GoW and RDR2, do you still feel this holds up as one of the greatest games ever made or do you think this game was more a breath of fresh air after a painful 2017 with the previously mentioned games better resembling greatness?

You really hit this one out of the park in terms of how great World is and WHY, but I want to point out that in terms of aesthetics it dropped the ball in 2 very important key departments.
    1. Weapon Designs – I get the idea Capcom was going for but a lot of the "reskin" style weapons just plain LOOK bad. It's hard to enjoy making a lot of them when they look so dull and unappealing (god I am so sick of bagpipes. HH's got the worst of it with Taroth drops).
    2. Music – Don't get me wrong, the music is nice, but it isn't SPECTACULAR. I don't get the same rush I did when I first played Tri and those trumpets started blaring when I faced my first big monster in the Deserted Isle (Lagiacrus's theme is the DEFINITION of "hype"!). Tri, to me, is the platinum medalist for how to do music in a Monster Hunter game. World kiiinda comes close, but only kinda.

It’s a good game tell you kill everything 100+ times.

The weapon trees are weak, monsters are amazingly repetitive and the story is even weaker. Tell they add more story content and new monsters, I’m done with this.

I’m saying this as one of the biggest MH fans out there, I’ve been playing since the first MH came out.

It’s pretty and smooth but that’s all it is, beneath that it’s just the most repetitive MH game yet.

Love the game but i wished it had a competitive aspect to it like PVP but doing pvp wont be so simple and realistic to get hunters killing hunters. So i was thinking competitive like Gambit in destiny 2. Get 2 teams of 4 make them fight in a barrage of monsters to then face the strongest one and maybe let hunters invade to disrupt the flow. The fastest to kill wins.

I made a list of how Dragon-esque creatures are classified. Here we go!
    – Wyrms have no limbs to function as arms, legs, or wings.
Of these, Quetzalcoatl and Sea Serpents fit into this description. Quetzalcoatle are feathered Wyrms and Sea Serpents are…. obviously sea related.
    – Lizards have 4 limbs but no wings
Of these, Drakes are larger basic lizards such as the Komodo Dragon, Hydras are essentially Drakes with multiple heads, and Salamanders are closer to basic lizards, but with extra feet, usually 8 in total.
    – Amphitheres is similar to Wyrms, but they have 2 limbs which function as wings. Slifer the Sky Dragon is a prime example.
    – Wyverns have 4 limbs, 2 of which function as wings, but can often double as arms
For Monster Hunter, good examples of this are Rathalos, Rathian, Tigrex, and Diablos
A sub of a Wyvern is also a Cockatrice, which fits all the bills of a normal wyvern, but is half chicken.
    – Dragons have 6 limbs, with two of those functioning as wings, and two others possibly functioning as arms.
For Monster Hunter specifically, most Elder Dragons fit this description, those such as Gore Magala, Teostra, Kushala Daora, etc. Other Elders such as Akantor or Dahren Mohran are Lizards, specifically Drakes. A subcategory of Dragons is Fae, which are smaller dragons with magical abilities.
    – Lindwurms have only 2 limbs, like Amphitheres, but function as legs, and they have no arms, or wings. A prime example of this from Monster Hunter is Deviljho

I believe if you are going to talk about the game changing the gaming community you should address the bad parts as well, and also that the pc port is horrible. Sort of biased but I guess this is before the pc port so oh well.

Your review is well received because it can touch all the points others can't, that is to say they are just too long. Your entire opening act, up to "I present my review" is 10 minutes long, longer than a full game review by others already. You are busting your ego with those "my review is the most watched" comparisons.

I thought I found a good review channel and went on to check your other contents, but I see I've mistaken.
