The television series Downton Abbey followed the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. Over its 6 seasons, the series garnered 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, 69 Emmy nominations in total, making Downton Abbey the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys – even earning a Special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way.

These are just some of the films and TV shows which have filmed in Bradford City Hall and/or the half a mile radius surrounding it in Bradford city centre:

Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Gentleman Jack, The ABC Murders, Peaky Blinders, Victoria, King Charles III, The Windsors, Gunpowder, Girlfriends, South Riding, Seaforth, Ackley Bridge, Band of Gold, A Touch of Frost, The Great Train Robbery, The Brides in the Bath, The Red Riding Trilogy, Spooks: Code 9, DCI Banks, Happy Valley, The Syndicate, Room at the Top (2012), Damon and Debbie, Utopia, Residue, The Moorside, National Treasure, Bollywood Carmen Live, Dynamo: Magician Impossible, Portillo's Hidden History of Britain, The Hairy Builder, Songs of Praise, Heston's Great British Food, Rick Stein's Food Heroes, Ramsay's Best Restaurant, Welcome to Karachi, Gold, 1920, 1920: London, Commando 3, Billy Liar, Lies We Tell, Official Secrets, Testament of Youth, Funny Cow, The Selfish Giant, Wall of Tyranny, The Damned United, Blow Dry, LA Without a Map, The Dresser, A Private Function, To Walk Invisible, Life at the Top, Room at the Top (1959) etc etc.

Downton Abbey (2019) filmed in Little Germany and most likely used some of the same buildings in the above films and TV shows.

The most popular Bradford city centre locations seem to be:

1 – Bradford City Hall and the Bradford Police Museum (which is downstairs) has been used by at least 40 or 50 productions. Most of which have been in the last 10 years.

2 – Bradford City Park which surrounds Bradford City Hall (along with the Magistrates Court and the now demolished Bradford Central Police station) and usually coincides with filming inside Bradford City Hall in productions set in modern time periods.

3 – Little Germany which I'd estimate has also been used by at least 40 or 50 productions. Most notably in Bradford Cathedral, The Bradford Club, the Bradford Playhouse and a warehouse between Cater Street and Hick Street (which no-one ever seems to notice apart from me).

4 – The Midland Hotel which has been used by at least 5 productions in the last few years.

5 – The National Science and Media Museum which obviously mainly gets used for news productions.

6 – The Broadway Bradford which has been used for around 5 productions since it opened 3 years ago.

7 – Bradford College which has been used by at least 5 productions in the last few years.

    8 – The Alhambra Theatre.

9 – The Bradford Odeon has been used by at least 5 productions since it closed in 2000. It even was one of just a few places in the country to show the 2017 Doctor Who Christmas special days before it appeared on TV.

    10 – The Wool Exchange.

11 – The Bradford Hotel which I haven't noticed in anything recent, but appeared in a few things in the 1990's.

12 – Bradford Interchange which again I haven't noticed in anything recent, but appeared in a few things in the 1990's.

13 – Bradford Crown Court which I've only noticed in one drama, but has most likely been used in others.

Outside the city centre locations include:

1 – Lister Park and Cartwright Hall which has easily been used at least 10 times.

2 – Haworth and The Bronte Parsonage Museum which obviously mainly gets used for productions about the Bronte Sisters.

3 – Valley Parade which has been used in at least 5 drama productions (not that anyone realises), as well as all the shows about football or the Bradford Fire.

4 – East Riddlesden Hall which has been used in at least 5 productions.

5 – Peel Park which has been used in a few productions recently.

6 – Undercliffe Cemetery which has been used in at least 10 productions.

7 – Salts Mill and Saltaire which must have been used by at least 30 productions by now.

8 – Ilkley Moor and the Cow and Calf Rocks which again must have been used by at least 30 productions.

9 – Dalton Mills which has been used by around 20 productions.

10 – Odsal Stadium which has doubled for Wembley a few times.

11 – Bolling Hall which strangely only seems to have been used a few times, even though it's one of the oldest buildings in the city, is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and has been involved in real wars.

12 – Keighley and Worth Valley Railway which has been used by at least 50 productions. Maybe even as many as 100 productions.

There's no doubt many places I've forgotten about, and no doubt many films and TV shows I don't know about yet, but when I do and have got my Bradford Film Locations blog started, I'll start adding them to IMDB and Wikipedia, and I'll let the official Bradford Film Heritage know what's missing from their website.

We aren't the world's first UNESCO City of Film for no reason.

    Don't ruin a good thing
I have no idea how a single movie can properly encompass what Downton is unless the movie itself is just a really long episode
That being said, I'll still see it and try to keep an open mind

I think they should call it Downtown Abbey: The Movie or Downton Abbey: [insert clever subtitle] because just calling it Downtown Abbey will get confusing if you're comparing it to the TV show. Is it a remake? Is it the final episode? Prequel? What is it???
